PLEASE NOTE

A lot of the questions about the HISTORY of this DVD can be answered by going to Deep Freeze Story page, where you will find most of the back story and history of the project.
I am in the process of updating that page so please be patient and more will be added very soon.

SPECIFICATIONS

SOURCE MATERIAL: Most of the show's source material is original NTSC AMPEX 2-inch Quad videotape but some of it is taken from a Sony U-matic SP cassette copy of a 2-inch Quad reel, which was the only existing material found after producer Alan Pacella passed away.
The video was restored and up-rezzed to make it good enough to view on today's modern large screen HDTV sets.

The show plays in a 4:3 display inside a 16:9 frame. No effort was made to "stretch" or re-scan the material to fill a 16:9 frame because I felt that this would drastically reduce picture quality and modify the
material in ways which were not originally intended.
I experimented for a very long time with ways to modify the show to fill a 16:9 aspect ratio but ultimately decided to stay with the original aspect ratio out of respect for the material.

RUNNING TIME: 127 minutes - DVD-9 disc - COPY PROTECTED - REGION 0

BURNED OR PRESSED?

These discs are commercially pressed from a glass master at a commercial DVD replication plant.
If you are in possession of a BURNED COPY of this show, it is a COUNTERFEIT COPY, as we do NOT sell BURNED DVD's of this show under ANY circumstances.

AUDIO

Dolby AC-3 Stereo 2.1 taken directly from the audio live feed to the AMPEX 2-inch Quad reels.
Stereo track is synthesized from the 2-inch Quad audio track.

WHO GETS PAID?

Naturally, Deep Freeze Films has invested an enormous amount in this project, in both money and time, but a generous portion of the proceeds DO GO DIRECTLY to the estate of Leon Russell.
It's the right thing to do, that's why.

ODDS AND ENDS

Q: Why is it called "Out of the Deep Freeze" and were the tapes actually FROZEN?
A: I get this question a lot, and lots of people call this "the freezer tapes" but the whole thing is a misnomer. Yes, Gil Fera DID store all these tapes in an old Norge deep freezer but it was BROKEN...it didn't work. It was an old broken freezer and apparently old Gil just thought it made the perfect storage locker, because he drilled a padlock on it and threw the tapes in there, put the padlock on it and forgot about them.  So, the tapes were NEVER actually FROZEN at any time, they just sat there in the basement at room temperature, gathering dust and mold and whatever else is present in the musty environment of an old broken freezer.
Not ideal storage conditions but not nearly as terrible as it would have been had the unit been working, of course. My ex-wife, who got me the meeting with the producer (Alan Pacella) had a flair for the dramatic and after listening to Alan talking about Gil and his unusual tape storage habits, jumped up, and with a wild gesticulation, said: "Alan, I've GOT IT...LEON RUSSELL...OUT OF THE DEEP FREEZE!"
Alan jumped up and said, "Oh my GOD, that's PERFECT! Out of the Deep Freeze, THE LOST REELS!!, it's PERFECT!!"
And the two of them started jumping up and down and running around saying it over and over again. It was a pretty hilarious moment and of course, seeing as Alan loved the idea, it stuck, despite the fact that the U.S. Copyright Office name that he had filed was "The Best of the Leon Russell Festivals".
As far as Alan was concerned, from that moment onward it was Out of the Deep Freeze and that is how it was originally released on VHS in 1989.

Q: What's that strange looking effect that happens when the cameras are shooting the stage lighting?

A: This is an analog videotape shot nearly FIFTY years ago using analog color TV cameras that used vacuum tube image sensors. Old cameras of this type exhibited this characteristic "BURN IN" effect whenever they were shooting a strong and bright light source.
In fact, if you shot lights that were TOO bright, you ran the possible risk of permanently burning the image of that light source into the image sensor tube. This is what video looked like back in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's until SOLID STATE image sensors were developed.

Q: What is the wiggly looking line at the very very bottom of the screen?

A: The squiggly couple of lines at the very very bottom of the screen is the videotape skew line, which was not seen on older television sets because older TV sets had rounded off picture tubes.
After diddling with this artifact over and over and over again, I simply decided that getting rid of it by resizing the image would compromise the picture quality because the software would rescan and resample the image data, so in the interest of doing as little recompression and resampling as possible, I decided to leave it alone. I also did not want to "mask off" the area either. What you are looking at is the ENTIRE image area as seen by the studio engineers in the video master control booth as recorded.

Q: Why are the songs not in the same order as the Leon Live record album?

A: Because the Leon Live album was not a part of this project at all. I do not own copyright to the original 24 track audio recording used to create the Leon Live record album. This video is an entirely separate project and is not a Shelter Records product.
It IS a video recording OF the Leon Live album tour however it is a recording of the stage performance itself, and therefore it exists as a performing arts recording in compilation form.
I only own copyright to the audio and video tracks ON the actual VIDEOTAPE ITSELF, so what you are seeing and hearing are the songs in pretty much the exact order as performed on those two nights on stage, whereas the song order was CHANGED by Shelter Records when they created the Leon Live record album.

Q: What editing software was used on The Best of the Leon Russell Festivals?
A: The Best of the Leon Russell Festivals DVD 2005 edition AND the current 2017 edition were both edited exclusively on Sony Vegas Pro.
NEAT VIDEO was used extensively to clean up analog noise and artifacting.
The original 1989 VHS was offline edited on a 3/4 inch U-Matic editng suite which utilized JVC-CR600 series front loading VTR's
and was online edited in a CMX suite utlizing SONY BVH-3100 1-inch Type C VTR's.

AUDIO
Every effort has been made to make the audio as close as possible to the original audio track as recorded from the original mix sent to the videotape machines.
If you use a home theater system, please set the audio to your factory defaults with no enhancement or surround sound, as these "Hollywood movie" type audio settings are made to enhance movie special effects.
This is a 1972 rock concert so just off the top of my head I am going to say that the audio is not like that in a 21st century Hollywood blockbuster movie, and all the testing was done with audio settings pretty much FLAT in order to provide the best possible sound across a VERY wide variety of systems.

OVERSEAS
SHIPPING COSTS

In 2005 it cost roughly six bucks to mail a DVD overseas...maybe eight bucks tops.
This morning I learned that it NOW costs $13.75 to mail a DVD to Hong Kong!!!
Even CANADA is ten bucks!
So it is with GREAT REGRET that I must jack up the International Shipping charges to reflect that jump in prices.
I hate the fact that it costs so much but I have no choice in the matter.
If it makes you feel any better please know that FedEx wants $26.74 and UPS wants $17.55, so U.S. Post Office is the cheapest way to go.
Overseas mailing is just scandalous, that's all there is to it :(

AGAIN THIS ONLY APPLIES TO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING.
DOMESTIC SHIPPING IN THE USA IS CHEAP, LESS THAN THREE OR FOUR BUCKS TOPS.

DVD WON'T
PLAY ON MY
COMPUTER

Microsoft is not allowed to INCLUDE DVD media players IN their operating system.
That means your computers don't have a proper DVD media player, that's all.
I have been using VLC Media Player since 2001, with zero issues, quite simply the BEST video player there is.
Works on ALL operating systems, Windows OR Mac.
